Historic Legal Precedent in the US: Alabama Reaches $100 Million Settlement with TikTok; Nighttime Curfew and Mandatory Productive Pauses Introduced

In a landmark lawsuit led by Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall targeting addictive social media algorithms, a historic settlement has been reached. TikTok has agreed to pay at least $100 million, enforce an overnight access curfew from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. for minors, introduce mandatory productive pauses after 15 minutes of continuous scrolling, and eliminate cosmetic filters for teens.

A historic milestone in the legal battle against tech platforms' addictive algorithmic designs targeting children and adolescents has been achieved in the United States. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announced a landmark settlement of at least $100 million with TikTok just days before the scheduled jury trial. The agreement, which could reach up to $300 million if other states join under qualifying terms, imposes the strictest legal safeguards to date directly curbing the platform's addictive design mechanics.

One of the most consequential provisions of the agreement is a mandatory overnight restriction aimed at safeguarding youth sleep cycles and circadian health. Under the terms, TikTok will implement an overnight access curfew completely barring minors under 18 from accessing the app between 12:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. Additionally, push notifications and direct messaging functionality will be automatically suspended during these overnight hours as well as during standard school hours.

To counter endless doomscrolling and compulsive dopamine feedback loops, mandatory 'Productive Pauses' will be integrated directly into the application. Under this framework, young users scrolling videos continuously for 15 minutes will experience screen interruptions urging them to step away, followed by escalated friction prompts at 60 and 90 minutes. A daily usage cap of two hours will be instituted for minors, alongside robust parental controls allowing families to enforce even stricter limits.

The settlement also mandates sweeping changes to protect body image and mental wellbeing. TikTok will permanently ban AI beauty and cosmetic alteration filters for adolescent users and will turn off personalized recommendation feeds by default for minors. Attorney General Marshall stated: 'The era of social media platforms unchecked profiting at the expense of our children's mental health and cognitive development is ending. This settlement establishes a powerful global blueprint against predatory algorithmic design.'

Legal experts and adolescent health advocates emphasize that while legal settlements establish critical accountability, establishing daily digital boundaries at home and school remains crucial. Preventing midnight screen exposure and maintaining daytime focus require reliable boundary tools. Advanced tools like Limitra App Block complement these legal standards by automating device curfews, silencing distracting apps during study sessions, and empowering families and individuals to take charge of their digital habits.
