A landmark empirical investigation published in The Lancet Regional Health Europe—the SMART Schools study—critically evaluated the mental health impact of restrictive secondary school mobile phone policies on adolescent psychological wellbeing.
The researchers examined 1,227 pupils aged 12-15 across 30 secondary schools in England (20 enforcing restrictive phone prohibitions and 10 permitting usage). The study found no statistically significant evidence that school-day phone bans reduced adolescent anxiety, depressive symptoms, problematic social media usage, or sleep disturbances.
While the authors noted that institutional bans maintain educational decorum and reduce in-class distractions, they emphasized that the primary psychological toll of digital hyperconnectivity occurs outside the classroom—predominantly during unsupervised evening and nighttime hours.
The findings suggest that daytime restrictions often lead to compensatory evening bingeing. Consequently, meaningful mental health improvements require structural digital hygiene interventions directly embedded into after-school home routines.
