New Zealand National Report: School Phone Ban Boosts Classroom Focus by 80% and Reduces Bullying
New Zealand's Education Review Office (ERO) published its national evaluation report titled 'Do Not Disturb'. Following the mandatory 'Phones Away for the Day' policy, 80% of secondary teachers confirmed improved student focus, 77% noted better classroom behavior, and 69% reported a sharp drop in bullying.
New Zealand's Education Review Office (ERO), in partnership with the Ministry of Education (Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga), has published a comprehensive national evaluation report titled 'Do Not Disturb: A review of removing cellphones from New Zealand's classrooms', assessing the nationwide impact of the mandatory 'Phones Away for the Day' policy introduced in 2024.
Championed by Education Minister Erica Stanford and Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to restore classroom engagement and academic excellence, the regulation mandates that personal smartphones, smartwatches, and connected gadgets remain packed away throughout the entire school day, including recess and lunch intervals.
According to the ERO evaluation, 80% of secondary teachers reported that removing phones significantly improved students' ability to concentrate and stay engaged with learning materials. Between 61% and 66% of educators recorded measurable gains in student academic achievement, while 77% noticed improved classroom behavior and 69% registered a significant reduction in bullying and unauthorized recording.
The review also highlighted a remarkable resurgence in playground socialisation, with students engaging in sports and face-to-face peer conversation rather than silently scrolling feeds. However, the ERO pointed out that parental texting during school hours remains a primary driver of non-compliance among senior students, urging families to actively reinforce distraction-free boundaries.
Child development specialists emphasize that while institutional restrictions restore daytime attentional sanctuary, sustaining mental focus and healthy circadian habits at home requires purposeful digital discipline and robust app-blocking tools like Limitra App Block.
